Descriere
So much is happening in the world these days. We are caught up in a rapid technologic transformation, with all fields and industries being impacted by this wave. Orthodontics is no exception. Today, technology has a huge impact on dental and orthodontic practices. Most of the challenging mechanics in orthodontic mechanotherapy of the past, such as leveling and alignment, have become extremely easy due to improvements in material technology. Esthetic “invisible” orthodontic appliances such as clear aligners, lingual orthodontic appliances, and temporary anchorage devices (TADs) have become the “game changers” in orthodontics.
In 2022, the world is experiencing a transition (a “hybrid”) era from analog to digital techniques in orthodontics. It would not be surprising if orthodontic techniques based on simulations become the “future” of orthodontic practice and soon replace the wire-bracket systems. The new millennium brought about a paradigm shift in diagnosis and treatment planning concepts in orthodontics. Today, particularly adult patients visit our clinics with the hope of improving their smile through orthodontic treatment. Many adult patients have complex and challenging dental situations such as chipped or discolored teeth, worn occlusion, etc. Orthodontic treatment on its own is often insufficient to resolve these problems. Thus, a team approach involving clinicians from various dental disciplines is often necessary to deliver a realistic and satisfactory dental solution.
The interdisciplinary treatment concept is relatively new for many orthodontists. Orthodontic education by its nature covers function and esthetics together, based on the old concepts inherited from its founders. Therefore, young orthodontists usually do not think about their possible role in an interdisciplinary team. The main objective of this book is to introduce ways in which orthodontics can contribute to esthetic interdisciplinary treatments and to give young orthodontists tips in this regard. This book would also be beneficial for general dentists who want to improve their capabilities and the quality of their dental work by collaborating with the orthodontist.
